Did You Know??

Have you ever thought that a light source could fade fabric and artwork? Most of you probably know that if a couch is in front of a window and the sun hits it everyday, overtime it will begin to fade. But to my surprise some light bulbs can have that same affect. This all depends on the amount of UV light it produces. Along with sunlight,  incandescent and fluorescent bulbs can have that same affect. Even though the amount of UV light that these bulbs emit is very small, over time, fabric and artwork can begin to fade.

So, What should you do?? LED lights, which produce no ultraviolet light, are your best bet to keep fabrics and art from fading. But remember, you still have sunlight to look out for, so keep your blinds or curtains closed while sun is beaming for more protections.

Looking Towards the Future-- Sneak Peak

 Over the past couple of months, the showrooms have been in the process of installing a "go green" wall (as we call it). This wall consists of the newest technology in the lighting industry. From Compact Fluorescent, Halogen, and LED, this wall is the Future of Lighting! The wall will feature products from Satco, Cree, Lightolier, & Lutron.

Showcase Home in Dothan

Mayer Lighting Showroom had a lighting package that was used in the Showcase Home this passed weekend in Dothan, AL. The home was built by Omega Builders, and was the #1 home on the Parade Map. The home is located in the Highland Manor Subdivision (111 Berwick Court). Air Leakage in Recessed Lighting

Did you know that air and moisture could be leaking out of your recessed light? I found an article from the Pennsylvania Housing research that talks about some issues concerning the impact of recessed cans on residential energy use and the integrity of the building enclosure, with regards to air leakage and potential moister problems.

Air leakage is not something that a homeowner wants to deal with. It will increase fuel bills, cause discomfort, and lead to moisture problems. The large openings needed to install recessed cans make them extremely susceptible to air leakage. Many studies have shown that can lights are responsible for the worst air leakage. Because of this leakage, a homeowner could lose between $5-$30 per year worth of energy and could have about one-third of a gallon of water dumped into their attic daily.

What do you do to prevent this air leakage? Within the past 10 years, most major lighting manufacturers have made different types of trim packages that are "Air-tite, Air-Loc, and Air-Seal"

To prevent having problems, be sure to have your recessed cans checked to make sure there is no air leakage or moisture issues.

Tip of the Day: Lighting on Trees

Tip of the Day:

Summer is fast approaching and I am sure you are getting your landscaping and landscape lighting in place before all of the backyard barbecues. One quick tip to know about mounting lighting on trees. As we all know, trees are living trees and require special attention.

1. Maintenance: Make sure you will have a way to maintain lights before installing them. The lights will have to be changed periodically so you will need to have easy access to them.
2. Fasteners: Make sure to use stainless steel or cadmium plated steel fasteners. Never use brass or copper fasteners as they will oxidize over time which is poisonous to trees.
3. Allow Room for Growth: When you mount the light, make sure there is room for growth upward and outward. The supply cable should be attached to the tree trunk with nylon cable ties that are screwed to the tree.

Building & Remodeling Expo Update

This last weekend we participated in the Building & Remodeling Expo in Pelham, AL. The show went great! We want to thank everyone that took the time to visit us at our booth. We really enjoyed meeting everyone and showing off all the great things that Mayer Lighting Showroom has to offer. For those of you that were unable to attend the show, see the picture of our fabulous booth below:

At our booth we were giving away a beautiful Murray Feiss Chandelier. The contemporary chandelier features a unique frame consisiting of alternating rings and rods in a circle, and is finished in beautifully textured silver dust. Congratulations to Pat Wallis- winner of the light fixture.

Wiregrass Home & Garden Show

March 9&10 our Dothan showroom participated in the 5th annual Wiregrass Home & Garden Show held at the Dothan Civic Center. All the proceeds went to help Habitat for Humanity. The booth was filled with new and fabulous lighting from Mayer Lighting Showroom. At the show they aslo discussed and showed the benefits of LED lamps. (big thanks to Curt Vance). And had a drawing for a chandelier. The winner was Mike Goodson from Dothan, AL, who is currently doing a few home renovations. The show went great and they were able to show all the great things Mayer Lighting Showroom has to offer. See pictures below of the fabulous booth.
